Merry Christmas from Halifax, Nova Scotia!

Fortunately, the fears of two youngsters were put to rest when Santa made his delivery to the Forgie home on Christmas Eve. Ashley and Grant must have been very good this year for Santa seemed to be extra generous. They were a bit concerned that Santa wouldn't know where to find their new home but a glimpse at the tree on Christmas morning left no doubt that he knew where to find them!

So, I suppose I need to explain the photo. While Ashley has always wanted a little sister, she has had to make do with what she has. Therefore, she tends to dress Grant up like her little sister and Grant is only too happy to oblige. He was quite proud of his "nightie" and I think dad is a bit concerned that this dressing up in girl's clothing is a reflection of future habits. Don't worry dad, he's all boy!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

December 10 brought our first snow fall. The kids couldn't watch the weather channel without seeing snow everywhere else...but here. Well, yesterday their wish finally came true and here it is...snow, and lots of it. It's actually quite beautiful although Rob might disagree since he was the one actually clearing it out. The kids made their first snowman of the season. It looks as though the joy could be shortlived as they're predicting rain and warmer temperatures over the next couple of days. Click on the photo to get a better view!

Ashley lost tooth #4 today which means she is now toothless in the front...top and bottom. Hard to believe she's getting to be such a big girl..even Grant is amazed at this wonder! I will avoid singing "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth" since I'm certain Grandpa Dempster has already began humming it as he's reading this...

A Friendly Visitor

Congratulations Kelly! You are the first guest to stay at the Hotel Forgie in lovely Halifax, Nova Scotia! The weekend of December 2 brought our first visitor, Sharon's good friend Kelly. Kelly is Ashley's "fairy god mother" and has always been great at visiting us wherever we are. We did some brief tourist things including a trip to Lawrencetown Beach (Ashley's favourite place) and the Lower Deck (every drunk in Halifax's favourite place). It was a lot of fun and the kids loved having Kelly here and abused her completely. I'll bet you had a good sleep when you got home, didn't you Kelly!

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween. I'm sure everyone and their kids had a good evening collecting enough candy to supply us for a while. It sounds like everyone had great weather for it. It's the first time I remember taking the kids out trick or treating without winter coats squeezed under the costume.

While there are many benefits to living outside of the city, the one downfall is Halloween. It takes a lot of time and energy going from house to house and up every driveway. While you do burn some extra calories (which come in handy after raiding the kids' bags every night) it's quite an effort just to collect. I think the kids were out for about 2 hours and managed to get no more than 20 houses done! Some neighbours were resourceful and brought their tables down to the bottom of their driveway...very clever and appreciated! Fortunately, everyone was very generous and the kids did manage to fill their bags pretty quickly. But next year, we take the Gator tractor!

The kids did have a blast. Grant was a football player (Dallas Cowboys of course) for the Firefighter's party Rob took them to and changed his disguise to become Batman for Halloween night. Ashley was a funky orange and black witch. Grant was so excited after each house and became even more excited when I said he could go and do more houses. He ended the night by saying, "this was the best Halloween ever!" Okay, not like a 3 year old has a history of Halloweens to compare it to, but we took that as a sign the evening was a success!

Well, it looks like it's time to start thinking about Christmas. Take care all and thanks for your very humorous and very appreciated feedback on some previous topics! Miss you all!

Our Baby Is Back!

Well, if I didn't see it for myself, I never would have believed it. It seems our new car was a victim of something, we just don't know what. It has been located safe and sound unharmed. The best guess of the police is that it was victim to young pranksters or not so swift thieves. It looks as though it has probably been there for some time. There weren't any signs of entry or damage so our baby is back home. For the doubters, the parking receipt in the window proved it was moved from its original parking lot, we haven't lost our minds to salty air. Oops sorry, wrong baby in that photo, that's me, Rob's other overpriced baby. Wow, no wonder they called me "head"!

Whew, we made it!

Thanks to those who checked in on us over the weekend. Fortunately, Ophelia never showed up here with the exception of some rain but nothing we haven't experienced before! Maybe a little bit of good luck came our way -- but let's not jinx it!

A Wee Bit of History

Nova Scotia (Latin for New Scotland) is a Canadian province on the North Atlantic coast. Nova Scotia has an area of 55,500 square kilometres and a population of just under 940,000. Its capital is Halifax, which is home to about 350,000 people. Just fewer than 95% of Nova Scotians identify themselves as being Canadian born.

The flag of Nova Scotia, a blue saltire on a white field, is a simple reversal of the Scottish flag (a white saltire, Saint Andrew's cross, on a blue field). It also bears the royal arms of Scotland, a gold shield with a red rampant lion. Yawn, yawn...sorry, but not everyone who reads this is Canadian!

What do you call someone from Halifax? A Haligonian! It sounds like a derogatory term but that's really what they (or should I say "we") are called.

Did you know? There is no IKEA in the province of Nova Scotia. "Dum!" (that's Swedish for stupid). Even "dummer" iz da fakt dat IKEA's wooden furniture is manufactured in Cornwallis, a town located here in the Annapolis Valley (no, it's not all made in Sweden). Dat really iz "Dum"!

And You Thought Your Day Sucked!

For those who I have not been in touch with lately...allow me some time to update you on what has taken place. I hate to go "back to the beginning" but it must be done...

July 18, 2005: Oh *(*&&) where are my keys? No...my only other spare car key is with Rob...who's in Halifax! I can't go without a car this week and I need to get my sister and her kids from the train station in a few hours. You want how much to tow it and have one of those fancy microchip keys made? Cripes, it's cheaper to rent a car for two days..."Hello, Avis?". You know, those keys never did show up...so much for the War Amps key tags.

July 25, 2005: Reading the paper today, "Ha ha, look at that, it says that good things will happen to me but not to leave town to get it! Isn't that a coincidence, I'm leaving for Halifax with the kids in a few days. Am I missing a sign here?

July 27, 2005: "I'm sorry, Mrs. Forgie, we're no longer able to take your dog on Friday's flight as we have overbooked." Later that day, "Hi, this is the kennel calling, just wanted to let you know that the crate you sent for Dallas won't be accepted by the airline as she's not able to turn around easily in it (what they really meant was go and buy another very expensive one that she can do cartwheels and back handsprings in). Oh, and look at that, the movers didn't bother to take the things from under the kitchen sink and they have put muddy footprints all over our good carpets.

July 28, 2005 (Departure Day): Come on kids, let's go to our new life in Halifax! We'll meet daddy in Quebec City so that mommy doesn't have to do the entire 15 hour drive on our own. Two hours later, somewhere just past Montreal, it's Rob on the phone "Hi, my flight has been cancelled and there are absolutely no flights out of here until tomorrow." Hmm, I won't panic, I guess we'll have to drive on our own kids. By the way, who's going to take hysterical Dallas and put her on a flight to Halifax? Thanks Steve!

July 29, 2005: "Hi Mr. and Mrs. Forgie, this is your lawyer calling, we have a problem with the house you're supposed to move into in 6 hours. Your driveway is on someone else's property so technically, youre landlocked. Do you still want to buy the house?" Later that day... "Okay kids, you have just spent two days in a car driving here, now let's get back in the car and go and find another house! It's okay if you want to kill each other and your parents, we're close to having nervous breakdowns anyhow!"

July 30, 2005: Whoo hoo! We get to stay in a bachelor suite hotel room with two kids, a dog and a cat! Why do we get to have all this fun? Aren't we lucky kids! Note the sarcasm, it's been building for a while.

Time passes and we manage to survive the hotel ordeal and act like tourists for a while enjoying some of the province's beautiful places. Don't worry kids, mommy didn't jump, not yet anyhow!

August 12, 2005: Congratulations, we have a 1 bedroom hotel room available for you and your family now. This must be your lucky day as there are virtually no hotel rooms available in this city during the summer without reserving months ahead. Happy Birthday Ashley!

August 30, 2005: Hmmm, where's my VISA card? I know I put it right here on the counter top. Gee, looks like housekeeping has been going through my things.

August 31, 2005: Congratulations, here is your beautiful new home. Call as many cleaning people as you can, you don't want to touch that place without rubber gloves. Let's stay here until very late trying to get this cleaned up.

September 1, 2005: It's moving day! Yippee...hey, where in the hell is my brand new car? I know I parked it here. Last night, someone was in my hotel parking spot so your clerk told me to park in this parking lot. He even brought me to the spot himself...now my car with 470 kilometres on it is gone. What do you mean they steal cars and drive them straight onto containers that go across the ocean...that's common in port cities is it? Fantastic!! Sarcasm has now peaked.

That same day: What do you mean one of the movers left the basement door open when it poured rain and the basement carpet has been soaked? Is he dumb? Oh, okay I didn't know that.

September 6, 2005: Who am I speaking with, the teacher from Grant's new preschool? Oh, you can't take him anymore because your new building isn't ready on time? What on earth am I going to do with this him until December? Grant, do you now how to paint or sew curtains?

September 12, 2005: "I'm sorry Mr. Forgie, your flight to Atlanta has been cancelled. I guess you're not going to get to make it to Atlanta tonight in time for the NFL game. You can get on a flight tomorrow morning. In the meantime, here is a voucher you can use for future flights anywhere Delta flies. We apologize for any inconvenience."

September 13, 2005: Hmm, look at that, CNN is reporting that Delta is expected to file for bankruptcy later this week or early next week. Does this mean my voucher isn't worth the paper it's written on?

September 14, 2005: This is who from Canada Revenue Agency? You want how much more?!!

September 15, 2005: Dallas chased her ball under what and can't get out? The front porch? What did she do that for? I don't know how to pry up or saw floor boards and Rob is in Atlanta. Two hours later...Okay Dallas, never chase your ball under the porch again...you'll never get yourself out. Wait until daddy gets home and sees that I had to cut the porch open. He's going to have a heart attack.

September 16 (current day): I wonder where I'd look in the Yellow Pages for hex removal? Oh, look at that, they're saying there's a possibility Hurricane Ophelia can show up here as a severe tropical storm. We won't worry about that...yet.

So, there you have it, our experiences in Halifax so far. Would you believe us if we said we're actually enjoying it here and while yes, there has been a lot of emphasis on things that have gone wrong, we have had many things go well. Ashley is loving school and has met many new friends. Grant has met some little boys in the area and is having fun exploring the new area with them and playing pirates on the caves outside. Our home is gradually becoming what we wanted, we have met some wonderful neighbours, and Dallas has stayed away from the front porch. Take care all. September 16, 2005
